THE WATERLOO REGIONAL POLICE ASSOCIATION is a labour organization that is union equivalent. It was formed to pursue the mission to protect workers, increase their pay, improve their working conditions, and unite and promote the mutual interest of the Active Membership. The Active Membership of the Association is comprised of Police Officers and Civilian employees of the Waterloo Regional Police Service. As a Member of the organization they are required to pay a certain percentage of their annual salary. Upon retirement, Active Members automatically become Life Members and continue to enjoy all the privileges of an Active Member except that of holding office on the Executive Board, and voting at the General Meetings of the Association.
The Association is owned and operated by the Active Membership. Members are elected by the General Membership to structure an Executive Board of Directors. A full-time President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, Editor and five Directors are appointed and serve a three year term. The Board meets on a bi-weekly basis to discuss and make decisions on matters pertaining to the Association and Recreation Centre. The General Membership, which is Active Members only, meet on the second Tuesday of every second month.
The Association was formed in 1972 as a result of Regionalization in the Waterloo County. Prior to that, the Waterloo County was comprised of the area Municipalities which include Kitchener, Waterloo, Waterloo Township, New Hamburg, Elmira, Galt, Preston and Hespeler. Police Forces and Associations of these cities were separate entities.
Upon formation of the Waterloo Regional Police Association, a committee was structured to purchase land for the purposes of an Association Head Office and recreational facility. On July 13, 1972 the land was purchased and by June 13, 1973 the facility was in operation.
The facility is situated on fifty-two acres of land. It offers various conveniences to its Members which consist of:
INDOORS: OUTDOORS:
Private Members Lounge Swimming Pool
Banquet Hall with a seating capacity of 350 people Tennis Courts
Kitchen Facilities Soccer Field
Games Room Baseball Diamond
Meeting Room Kids’ Playground

Public Washroom Facilities
The intention of the recreational facility was to provide a clubhouse and other conveniences for the use of Active Members, their families and guests. It was also provided to promote among its Members a social and friendly environment in the physical, mental, moral, and spiritual improvement of its Members.
In addition to the Membership, Associate Memberships are available to any person who is sponsored by an Active or Life Member and completes a proper application form provided by the Association. Since the Recreation Centre is a Private Members Club, those who apply must be approved by the Board. Once their application has been approved, they are required to pay a yearly nominal fee. Furthermore, Honorary Memberships are granted to individuals whose recommendation is passed by the General Membership.
Associate and Honorary Members are not permitted to vote, hold office or attend any meetings of the Association. The purpose of these Memberships is solely to allow the conveniences of the recreation facility.
